Tropical Storm Ernesto Approaches Southern Mexico Coast

Category 2 Hurricane Forecast to Make Landfall Tonight

Ernesto, a Category 2 hurricane, is expected to cross the southern portion of the Bay of Campeche tonight and approach the coast of Mexico within the hurricane warning area. The hurricane is expected to make landfall along the southern Yucatan Peninsula by Wednesday morning.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued a hurricane warning for the coast of Mexico from Punta Herrero to Campeche, including the Bay of Campeche. A tropical storm warning is in effect for the coast of Mexico from Campeche to Tulum.

Ernesto is moving west-northwest at 14 mph (22 km/h) and has maximum sustained winds of 105 mph (165 km/h). The hurricane is expected to weaken as it moves over land, but it is still expected to bring heavy rainfall and flooding to parts of Mexico.

Residents in the affected areas are urged to prepare for the storm and to follow the instructions of local officials. The NHC will continue to monitor Ernesto and provide updates as they become available.
