Managing ADHD Symptoms with Medication
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects an individual's ability to focus, control impulsive behavior, and manage their emotions. One of the most common treatments for ADHD is medication, which can significantly improve symptoms and enhance daily functioning.
Types of ADHD Medications
There are two main types of ADHD medications: stimulants and non-stimulants.
Stimulants
Stimulants increase the levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, such as dopamine and norepinephrine. These neurotransmitters play a role in attention, focus, and impulsivity. Some common stimulants used for ADHD include Ritalin, Adderall, and Concerta.
Non-Stimulants
Non-stimulants work in different ways to manage ADHD symptoms. Atomoxetine (Strattera) is a non-stimulant that increases the levels of noradrenaline, a neurotransmitter that helps with attention and focus. Clonidine and guanfacine are two other non-stimulants that work by reducing hyperactivity and impulsivity.
