UEFA Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League Reforms
New Format for 2024/25 Season
After two years of widespread consultations, UEFA has announced significant reforms to its major club competitions, the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and UEFA Europa Conference League. These changes will come into effect from the 2024/25 season.
Changes to the UEFA Champions League
The most notable change affects the UEFA Champions League. The current group stage format will be replaced by a 36-team league phase. This will give four more teams the opportunity to compete in the tournament. The 36 teams will be divided into four pots based on their UEFA coefficients. Teams from the same pot will not be able to face each other in the league phase. The top eight teams from the league phase will qualify directly for the knockout stage. The remaining 16 teams will play in a two-legged play-off to determine the remaining eight knockout stage participants.
Other Changes
* The UEFA Europa League will expand from 32 to 36 teams. * The UEFA Europa Conference League will remain at 32 teams. * The number of matchdays in the UEFA Champions League group stage will increase from six to eight. * The UEFA Europa League group stage will increase from six to eight matchdays. * The UEFA Europa Conference League group stage will remain at six matchdays.
